The Morning Tea

Good Morning, welcome to TMT Friday, as we end this week on a high note. We urge you to explore some new hobby this weekend like professional photography, astronomy, nature walks, or anything that excites you this weekend.

We also want to draw your attention to Wikipedia asking for donations. Wikipedia has been a constant knowledge resource for all of us for the last 20 years. To keep up with its mission of keeping content free and available, Wikipedia was never monetized (despite having millions of active users a day). Today, to keep up with their mission, they seek out help. We have done our part and urge you to do the same.

Also, it is the birthday of Jimmy Wales today, the founder of Wikipedia. We start the day with some words of inspiration from Jimmy:

The goal is to give a free encyclopedia to every person in the world, in their own language.  Not just in the “free beer” kind of way, but also in the free speech kind of way.

MARKETS

  • Markets: The Monetary Policy announced by RBI boosted sentiments leading to a gain in both Nifty and Sensex indices. Measures for one time restricting were announced to support NBFCs and Housing Finance Companies. Also, no extension to the moratorium period was announced. Now investors wait for the US stimulus package as that would bring a great lift to the market sentiments. Experts believe that the positive market sentiments would continue in the short term.

TECHNOLOGY & INNOVATION

  • RBI has announced measures to boost digital payments including a pilot for offline-based payments, which wouldn’t require Internet connectivity. They could employ an NFC based contactless payment service on mobile phones or a fund transfer provision through a wallet linked to a debit card without a smartphone connection.
  • Amazon.com Inc CEO Jeff Bezos sold shares worth $3.1 billion in the e-commerce company according to regulatory filings. Amazon shares have surged more than 73% this year. Bezos had planned to sell stock worth about $1 billion each year to fund his rocket company, Blue Origin.
  •  YouTube has banned 2,596 Chinese accounts it said were engaging in “coordinated influence operations” on political issues. These channels uploaded spammy, non-political content, but a small subset posted political content primarily in Chinese to further the CCP propaganda.

WHAT ELSE IS COOKING

  • RBI Monetary Policy Announcement: RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das has announced that the repo rate will remain unchanged. The MPC will remain watchful with respect to inflation dynamics to further use space available on the monetary side when appropriate. Along with additional liquidity of Rs 10,000 crore at repo rate to NABARD and NHB, RBI also allowed stressed MSME borrowers to restructure debt if their loans were classified as ‘standard’ as on 1 March 2020. Permissible loan to value ratio (LTV)  has been increased for loans sanctioned against pledge of gold ornaments and jewelry for non-agricultural purposes from 75 percent to 90 percent till 31 March 2021.
  • Railways to start Kisan Rail services: The railways will begin its Kisan Rail services to transport perishables through the public-private-partnership (PPP) model for a cold supply chain from August 7. The first such train, carrying vegetables and fruits, would run between Deolali in Maharashtra and Danapur in Bihar. Aggressive marketing is being done with local farmers, loaders, APMC, and individuals for the use of Kisan Rail.

MANAGERS’ CORNER – Supply Chain and Ops

Overall equipment effectiveness – A Goal for Total Productive Maintenance

What is OEE?

OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) is the gold standard for measuring manufacturing productivity. Simply put – it identifies the percentage of manufacturing time that is truly productive. An OEE score of 100% means you are manufacturing only Good Parts, as fast as possible, with no Stop Time. In the language of OEE that means 100% Quality (only Good Parts), 100% Performance (as fast as possible), and 100% Availability (no Stop Time).

How is OEE Calculated?

The simplest way to calculate OEE is as the ratio of Fully Productive Time to Planned Production Time. Fully Productive Time is just another way of saying manufacturing only Good Parts as fast as possible (Ideal Cycle Time) with no Stop Time. Hence the calculation is OEE = (Good Count × Ideal Cycle Time) / Planned Production Time.

What are the benefits of OEE Calculation?

OEE scores provide a very valuable insight – an accurate picture of how effectively your manufacturing process is running. It makes it easy to track improvements in that process over time.
