Good morning, welcome to TMT Monday. We welcome you today to this beautiful and amazing day to start your week and continue on the journey to becoming smarter and your best personal and professional version with us. As India celebrated it’s 74th Independence day, PM Modi looks optimistically at the world with “Make in India, Make for the world” rally. Dhoni retires from professional cricket marking an end of the legacy(2007 squad of the Indian cricket).

Here are a few inspiring words by MS Dhoni to ponder today,

Very often, what is important is to realize what went wrong, not only when you are losing a series or a game, but also when you are winning a series; when you need to realize which are the areas you need to work on.

MIND MONK

Feynman Technique: Learn anything

Learning is a constant process that we need to be adapted to, in a highly competitive world. We often wonder what are the best ways to learn and grasp difficult concepts. To put this in understanding, Richard Feynman, a noted physicist devised a 4-step technique to learn anything. Here are the 4 steps of the Feynman Technique:

  1. Teach it to a child: Write down what you know about a particular subject. This helps us to create connections and deeper learning.
  2. Reviews: Review the gaps in learning from step 1 and understand what are the boundaries.
  3. Organize and Simplify: Focus on the area points mentioned in Step 2 and organize the learnings with notes.
  4. Transmit: Best affirmation of learning is to further transmit the information further.

Try out the Feynman Technique and reach the pinnacle of leaning. Happy reading!

MARKETS

Markets: US stocks slipped on weak macro data as the economic recovery slowed, and the stimulus package talks reached a stalemate. Europe stocks also fell sharply on Friday as the UK adds France to its quarantine list. Indian indexes were also red due to profit booking and weak global cues. Today, the market would wait for further developments in the Telecom AGR case hearing on the domestic front. On the international front, the US-China meeting over the weekend would provide some direction to the markets.

TECHNOLOGY & INNOVATION

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the launch of the Digital Health Mission which gives every citizen a unique identity number. It will have all the information about his or her medical conditions and tackle pilferage and misuse of several health schemes either by patients or doctors.
  • Donald Trump now has a verified account on TikTok competitor Triller, another sign of the White House’s disfavor toward the ByteDance-owned video-sharing app. He has vowed to exert pressure on more Chinese companies such as technology giant Alibaba after the TikTok clampdown.
  • Facebook joined the companies publicly complaining about the 30% fee that Apple collects on payments made through its App Store. Facebook claimed that while they aren’t levying fees on paid online events listed on the platform in order to support businesses, they won’t extend such a courtesy on iOS because of the app Store tax.

 WHAT ELSE IS COOKING

  • Dhoni’s retirement announcement on Instagram keeps social media abuzz: Social media platforms were abuzz on Sunday with the news of former Indian cricket team captain MSD’s retirement from international cricket. Amul was quick to create cartoon promos based on the news. They illustrated everything from his batting prowess to his forever-calm attitude. Putting endless speculations to rest, the former India captain on Saturday announced retirement from international cricket. Taking a cue from his teammate, Suresh Raina on Saturday announced retirement from international cricket.
  • Russia says Saudi Arabia, UAE will test its COVID vaccine: Russia has reached an agreement in principle to conduct clinical trials of its coronavirus vaccine in Saudi Arabia and the UAE. The Russians are working with a pharmaceutical company in the kingdom and have shared data from Phase I and Phase II trials with Saudi partners and with the UAE too. Russia plans to start mass inoculations as soon as October.
  • Vistara likely to start flights from India to UK, Germany, France: Vistara airlines is all set to operate France to Germany flights while Delhi-London flights will take-off from next week with thrice a week schedule. The full-service carrier is also likely to operate flights between India and Germany, and India and France. Earlier this month, India and the UK signed a bilateral air pact, under which the airlines of both the countries can operate international flights with certain restrictions.

BUSINESS LOUNGE

Prem Ganapathy – The Dosawala

He was stranded at the Bandra station when the person accompanying him left him and ran away. Having to go nowhere, penniless, he got a job in a neighbourhood dosa restaurant as a tea boy. Prem became a huge hit with the customers because of his excellent customer service, initiatives, and relationship and brought business Rs. 1000 daily which was almost 3 times as compared to other tea boys.

Later, He found a spot and set up a south Indian stall. He did not know a thing about dosas and idli but learned by observation, trial, and error. The dosa stall was a huge hit and flourished during the 5 years from 1992-1997. But why was the tiny dosa stall so successful in spite of competition from ubiquitous eateries prevalent in Mumbai? According to Prem, it was its hygiene, proper appearances of the waiters and fresh ingredients which stood out as a difference.

He got passionate and invented a variety of dosas with Chinese style like American Chopsuey, Schezwan Dosa, Paneer chilly, Spring roll dosa, etc. The 108 types of Dosas in his menu gets him a lot of publicity. He started getting a lot of offers for franchising. Prem’s Dosa Plaza currently has 26 outlets and 5 of them are company-owned. It has 150 employees and a turnover of 5 crores. All the branches are connected and networked and there are training managers and proper manuals to maintain standard and uniform products and services. Currently, he is also getting inquiries from the US and Europe for franchisees.

 TMT VARSITY

Varsity: Agile Methodology

 Overview:

Agile is a software development methodology to build software incrementally using short iterations ranging for 1 to 4 weeks in order to meet the dynamic business requirements and business goals. As opposed to the Waterfall model (where are requirements are gathered up front and final software is delivered in 6-18 months), Agile has the advantage of shorter, targeted goals and constant feedback.

    • Define requirements and priorities.
    • Determine release date
    • Active role in iteration planning and releases
    • Ensure task prioritization
    • Bring in user perspective
    • Define acceptance criteria

Meetings in Agile Inspect and Adapt processes include the following:

How the work is planned in agile?

Depending on the team size, and the duration of an agile cycle, the work is planned. Here 2 key terms come in.

  1. Point: Point refers to how much a team can commit. A point is usually 8 hours.
  2. Capacity: How much an individual can commit which is evaluated in hours.

User Story: This determines the requirement by the user which is required as a functionality.
